An Artist’s Tribute to First African American Astronaut
Tavares Strachan, a visionary artist known for his thought-provoking works, embarked on a remarkable project called "Enoch" to honor the legacy of Robert Henry Lawrence Jr. Lawrence, an accomplished pilot and aspiring astronaut, became the first African-American selected for a national space program in 1967. However, his life was tragically cut short in a plane crash later that year. Strachan's project, Enoch, pays homage to Lawrence's groundbreaking achievements and his unfulfilled dreams of reaching the stars.
Robert Henry Lawrence Jr., born in 1935, possessed an unwavering passion for aviation and space exploration from a young age. Excelling in his studies, Lawrence earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry and was a decorated Air Force pilot. In 1967, he was selected for the United States Air Force's Manned Orbiting Laboratory program, making him the first African-American astronaut candidate. Tragically, Lawrence's life was cut short when he died in a plane crash later that year, leaving behind a legacy of unfulfilled potential.
Tavares Strachan, a contemporary artist known for his multidisciplinary approach, was deeply moved by Lawrence's story. Strachan saw the opportunity to merge art, science, and history through his artistic vision. The Enoch project, named after Lawrence's middle name, celebrates Lawrence's accomplishments whilst highlighting the barriers he faced as an African-American in the space industry during a tumultuous period in American history.
In December 2018 a Falcon 9 rocket took off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California with a unique cargo - a 24-carat-gold canopic jar with the soul of Lawrence. Canopic jars were used by ancient Egyptians to house the organs of the deceased for use in the afterlife. This jar was blessed at a Shinto shrine in Japan and “recognized as a container for Lawrence’s soul,” according to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
